Prostart Students Will Get First Look at Newly Designed CIA Marriott Pavilion

Restaurant industry leaders and students from across the state will be among the first to experience the new Marriott Pavilion on the campus of the Culinary Institute of America, which is scheduled for completion in February 2014.

The 31,000 square-foot facility, designed to advance culinary education, innovation, the arts and student life, will be the site of the New York State ProStart® Invitational on March 7 and 8, 2014. It includes the 800-seat Ecolab Auditorium, which features upscale audio-visual systems with state-of-the-art sound and a conference level with demonstration and classroom space.

The ProStart students will compete for trophies, scholarships and the opportunity to represent New York at the national level in rigorous culinary and hospitality management competitions.  Their efforts will be judged by industry and post-secondary leaders from across the nation.

"The Invitational highlights the accomplishments of students in our ProStart program,” said NYS Restaurant Association Educational Foundation Chairman Ken Desmond. "These students, their teachers and our ProStart program are a source of great pride for the Association and our members. If you’d like a reminder of what’s truly great about this industry, come see these extraordinary young men and women in action.  Better yet, volunteer to judge or staff the event.”

In addition to watching the students compete, those in attendance at the Invitational will be able to see the installation of "Gastrotypographicalassemblage” on the conference level. It’s a 33-foot by 9-foot work of art created by Lou Dorfsman, Art Director for CBS, made up of more than 1,650 individual letters spelling out culinary terms and 65 food-related objects. It’s been restored for the Marriott Pavilion by designer Nick Fasciano.

The New York State ProStart Invitational is open to the public. For more information about attending or volunteering at the event, contact Elizabeth Soscia, New York State Restaurant Association Educational Foundation Education Coordinator, by email ( or by phone (800-452-5212).
