Restaurant Association Educational Foundation Celebrates 10th
Anniversary of NYS ProStart Invitational
The New York State Restaurant Association will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of the annual New York State ProStart Invitational on March 7 & 8, 2014. Over the past decade, the New York State ProStart program has grown to more than 4,000 students in over 50 schools. More than 20 teams are expected to compete in this year’s invitational.
The world’s premier culinary college, The Culinary Institute of America (CIA), located in Hyde Park, NY, will be hosting the event. The Invitational will highlight the newest edition to the CIA campus, The Marriott Pavilion, a 31,000 square-foot facility, designed to enhance culinary education, innovation, the arts and student life. The Ecolab Auditorium includes over 800 seats, upscale audio-visual systems with state-of-the-art sound and a conference level with demonstration and classroom areas.
The Invitational consists
of two competitions. The first is the
hospitality management competition, sponsored by Rich Products. Management teams develop a proposal for the
next promising restaurant concept and present it to a panel of industry
judges. Next, their problem solving
skills are tested as they quickly solve challenges faced by managers every day.
There is also a culinary competition, sponsored by Wegmans, which highlights
each team’s creative abilities through the preparation of a three-course meal
in 60 minutes, using only two butane burners, and without access to running
water or electricity. There is no room for error as they are evaluated on
taste, skill, teamwork, safety and sanitation.
Competitors have the chance to win scholarships from a number of post-secondary institutions across the nation as well as bring home trophies and medals. Winning teams will also represent New York State at the National ProStart Invitational on May 3-5, 2014, in Minneapolis, MN.
