Late last week, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and the New York City Human Rights Commission released new regulations on pregnancy discrimination. Included in these new guidelines was language that prohibits restaurants and bars from refusing to serve pregnant women alcohol.

Two examples of violations listed in the regulations read:

  • A restaurant policy that prohibits staff from serving pregnant individuals raw fish or alcohol
  • A bouncer denies a pregnant individual entrance to a bar based on the belief that pregnant individuals should not be going to bars and/or drinking alcohol

The full text of the new guidance can be found here -

We encourage all restaurants to abide by these new guidelines and if you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to the Association at 212.398.9160 or email us at
