At February’s NYC Chapter Board Meeting, the New York State Restaurant Association invited Council Member Corey Johnson to participate in a roundtable discussion with our board members. Council Member Corey Johnson is the Chair of Community Board 4 in Manhattan and the Chair of the Committee on Health which has oversight on many different city initiatives and agencies including the Inspection Process and Letter Grade System enforced by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

At the roundtable, Council Member Corey Johnson shared important insights with the NYC Chapter Board including representatives from Benchmark Restaurant Group, Myriad Restaurant Group, Altamarea Restautant Group, Union Square Hospitality, Dominoes, and more. The discussion began with the Council Member highlighting the open communication process the DOH&MH has had with the Association regarding the proposed changes to Article 81. He then stressed that the education versus fine-first mentality is a priority for not only his Committee but for the DOH&MH as well. Also discussed at length was the need for the restaurant industry to have representation in City Hall through an advisory council and ombudsman office. The Association reviewed the list of nominees for the council and recommended that action be taken immediately to implement. Council Member Johnson offered the NYS Restaurant Association and members an open line of communication to continue helping with any issue small businesses are having and stressed the importance of preserving the neighborhood and boutique restaurant culture in the city.

This meeting is just one of many planned for upcoming chapter board meetings and events to allow members the opportunity to meet the City Council and discuss the many issues affecting restaurants in the city.
