STATEMENT ON THE END OF TIPPING

“With the proposed 50% wage increase for tipped workers looming, restaurant owners are scrambling to find any possible way to absorb such a drastic hike,” said Chris Hickey, Regional Director NYC of the New York State Restaurant Association. “Many are now exploring switching business models to institute a flat service change on every bill. Owners considering this switch should know federal, state, and city regulations on service charges are inconsistent and using them poses a significant legal risk in New York State. A better solution for everyone would be for Acting Dept. of Labor Commissioner Mario Musolino to amend the Wage Board proposal to a smaller increase over a longer time frame, so the hospitality industry can continue to function.”
